About

Natural wanders is…

A walking tour business specialising in unique, small-group journeys on beautiful trails, brought to life through fantastic stories. We strive to create tours that are as spectacular as Cape Town while celebrating the city’s unique history, people and wonders.

Three Key Pillars of Natural Wanders

Tell great stories

Cape Town is an explosion of life, colour and magic at the tip of Africa. There are incredible stories, and characters, around every corner. We seek to shine a light on the best of them in fresh and entertaining ways.

find the beauty

Our home is blessed with stunning beaches, dramatic mountains and sprawling vineyards. It also pulsates with diverse life and is considered “the hottest of hotspots” in biodiversity. We show you the best of it.

Taste Amazing Food

The fine wine, fresh produce, meats and cheeses of the Cape are a key element of our Natural Wanders. They elevate the tours and spice up our rest stops. The perfect reward for a morning well spent.

And I wander...

Hi, my name is Matthew Sterne – I’m a travel writer, walking guide, speaker and founder of Natural Wanders.

I grew up in Cape Town and took my first big step down this path in my early 20s, when I decided to go on a “gap decade” and did odd jobs around the world.

I worked for a pub crawl in Amsterdam, an ice cream factory in Norway and as a door-to-door lightbulb exchanger in Melbourne. I volunteered at a turtle sanctuary in Nicaragua, a camel safari in India and a newspaper in Colombia.

I moved with the seasons, lived hand-to-mouth and wrote a book about my travels.

Upon returning to Cape Town, I worked as a travel journalist for 10 years, five of them at Getaway Magazine, South Africa’s oldest and largest travel magazine.

On my assignments for Getaway, I discovered that South Africa is even more beautiful than I imagined. I also learned that our people and natural beauty are our greatest riches, and that sharing this through tourism is one of the best ways to create jobs, develop understanding, and take steps towards a better society.

With this in mind, Natural Wanders was born.

Now, I have the great joy and privilege to share the very best of Cape Town’s beauty and wonder with people from around the world.

I hope you too can join us for a wander some day soon.
