Overview
As the Food and Wine Capital of South Africa, Franschhoek is celebrated for its stunning wine farms and restaurants – and, of course, its spectacular mountain views. But Franschhoek is not only more beautiful than you can imagine, it’s more interesting than you might expect.
On the Franschhoek Wine Walk – as we wander through orchards, vineyards and gardens – we delve into five famous characters who have shaped the Franschhoek Valley – referred to today as the Valley of Dreams. We track the fascinating lives of these dreamers, from the first Khoisan huner-gatherers, to the French Huguenot settlers to the celebrity chefs who call Franschhoek home today.Â
We start in the town centre, but quickly slip into the surrounding farmland and country lanes. The panoramic views and curated gardens are a major highlight of the tour.
As you might expect, Franschhoek has some of the best wine and produce in the country. The walk culminates with a scrumptious farm-style lunch of assorted salads and mains under oak trees at La Cotte Heritage Farm.

Itinerary
We meet at the Dutch Reformed Church in the centre of town at 8:30am. This is the oldest building in town and a fitting place to start our wander.
After our welcome, we make our way down Main Street but quite quickly slip into a plum orchard and a local vineyard.
We cross some bridges and enter Mont Rochelle Wine Estate, where we have a stop at a dam.
With elevated views of the Franschhoek Valley, we taste Mont Rochelle wines on their deck.
The next leg of our amble is down a pleasant country lane, before entering the Bokkie Statue Garden at the stunning Leeu Estate.
We visit Mullineux & Leeu to taste five of their wines. Andrea Mullineux has been named SA’s winemaker of the year on five different occasions, so her wines and the tasting experience here are one of the highlights of the day.
With the day in full swing, we hop in a tuk tuk that escorts us to our lunch stop, the incomparable La Cotte Heritage Farm.
We enjoy a delicious lunch at La Cotte, the farm on which the town of Franschhoek was built. The Old Mill has recently been refurbished and is now a charming coffee shop, and our last stop.
We stroll down the route of La Cotte River and back into town.
We end back at the church, where we began our wine wander.
The Menu
The La Cotte homestead dates to a time when honest home-cooked meals were enjoyed around the family table – and that’s the feeling we get when eating there. With uninterrupted views of the Franschhoek valley, the seating areas all offer a unique experience and a memorable occasion.
- Parsley-stuffed chicken – Deboned thighs, creamy Parmesan samp, baby vegetables, citrus muscadel sauce
- Butternut squash risotto – Chilli oil, pickled pepper, tender stem broccoli, almonds
- La Cotte Farm Salad – A selection of fresh discoveries from our garden
